This page describes how USDeals evaluates products and arrives at the recommendations in our roundups and buying guides.
Research, Not Guesswork
Our team evaluates products through desk research: analyzing manufacturer specifications, comparing verified retailer listings, and reviewing patterns across publicly available customer feedback. We do not claim to physically evaluate every product in person, and we do not represent our coverage as such.
The USDeals Score
Many of our reviews include a USDeals Score out of 10, our own rating built from five criteria applied consistently across every review, in every category:
- Performance & Effectiveness (30%): how well the product does its core job.
- Build Quality & Durability (20%): materials, construction, and how well it should hold up over time.
- Value for the Price (20%): how the product compares to others in its price range.
- Ease of Use (15%): how simple the product is to set up, use, and maintain.
- Reliability & Support (15%): brand track record, warranty terms, and availability of customer support.
Each criterion is scored from 1 to 10, multiplied by its weight, and combined into a single score out of 10. We use this same weighting for every product we score, regardless of category, so scores are comparable within a roundup.
Safety is not a scored criterion, since how much it matters varies by category. Instead, for categories that touch electrical products, power tools, or other safety sensitive items, we call out relevant safety considerations and recognized standards separately in the article.
Defining Criteria First
Beyond the USDeals Score itself, we define what matters for a given category, such as capacity, compatibility, or specific features, before comparing products. Those criteria are stated in the article.
Pros, Cons, and Who Should Skip It
Every review balances strengths against limitations and states who the product is not a good fit for. If a roundup reads like it has no downsides, that’s a sign of a problem with the review, not the product.
Safety Sensitive Categories
For categories that touch electrical products, power tools, or other safety sensitive items, we note relevant safety considerations and recognized standards such as CPSC, UL, or ASTM where applicable.

Keeping Reviews Current
Products change, and so do our roundups. We note the publish date and, when a review is substantively updated, a last updated date.
